[opensuse-kde] Multiple desktops in KDE4

In KDE3.5 I was able to display an iconised view of my (eight) desktops on the
taskbar. This made it easy to select an empty desktop for a new task (e.g.
running digikam and rawtherapee together) while leaving other desktops
cluttered up with other work in progress.
I can't seem to find this function (should I be calling it a plasmoid?) in
KDE4. I can right click on applications in the taskbar and send them to other
desktops, but this is not quite the same as choosing a different desktop to
work on.
I'm also aware that there is probably a paradigm-shifting learning curve to
get over when moving from KDE3 to KDE4.
