Now that you've told me the name of the plugin I've googled for it, and
you are correct. I wish to get kmilo working. I became somehow addicted
to it.
The multimedia key response w/o kmilo looks like this:

The desired response with kmilo looks like this:
http://www.aedon.eu/test/desired_osd.png
Brilliant! It works.
If it not too much inconvenience, how to make it permanently?
But I have the mute on the master channel in gnome. Is that suppose to
be like this?
Channels available in KDE (kmix):
- - output master - no mute
- - output phone - mute available
- - output speaker - mute available
- - all input channels with mute including pcm.
Channels available in gnome (says alsamixer):
All output channels has a mute including master and pcm.
My sound card is according to:
- - yast:
0 CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device
- - kmixer:
C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC8
- - alsamixer (gnome):
C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC8 (alsamixer)
lspci -d 13f6:0111
05:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
Cheers
Pete

I'm not sure which OSD you're talking about here. do you mean the kmilo one?
do you mean the one that comes from some laptop ACPI bios? Are those buttons
you press standard multimedia keys or are they some laptop vendor specific
keys that raise/lower mixer volume by hardware interference?
I assume that if you don't want the kmix popup but the kmilo one,
Now that you've told me the name of the plugin I've googled for it, and

then we have
to make sure that the right app uses the global keyboard shortcut.
does it work, when it broke for you, after executing ths command sequence:
killall kded
killall kmix
kded
dcop kded kded loadedModules | grep kmilo
?

There is also an issue of not having the mute option on the main channel
of kmix (pcm channel has the option), but I will make a separate thread
for that issue.
is that because your sound card doesn't have a mute on the main channel (some
newer cards have that issue, they only have mute on the headphone or the
speaker output, not on the "emulated" master channel)?
