The kdepim3 from KDE:KDE3 and 10.3 has the fix mentioned by the responsible
kmail developer below. Look for "fix message status flags being lost in
kmail with imap" in rpm -q --changelog kdepim3. Maybe the kubuntu machine
does not have this fix?
: However, one intermediate version had a bug which messed up seen flags
: resulting in the described behaviour. This has been fixed in revision
