I have the same problem, and a workaround. Comments below.

NOT clicking past, just clicking on the attachement.

I'm using kmail from kdepim3-3.5.5-39

By choosing "Open with..." and entering "soffice" the attachment will open OK. 
Entering "oowriter" gives the error "File [...] not found".

OpenSUSE 10.2
OpenOffice_org-2.2-11.1

The workaround is thus to change the KDE file bindings to open office files 
with "soffice" instead of "oowriter" et al.
