A couple of things come to mind here. Are you using part or any parts
of the SUSE builds? If so, that could be your problem. Pretty much
everything works better if xmms is all Packman.
Second, there are some other programs out now that emulate xmms's look
without some of the bugs. As you mention xmms development has stalled,
but things like Audacious and others are doing well. I'm very pleased
with a new one I just found for the Xfce interface called xfmedia.
