Kmail SASL problems

For months Kmail has worked with SASL. Beginning yesterday, however,
after updating some packages, SASL is failing. Kmail gives me the
following error.
Sending failed:
Authorization failed, An error occurred during authentication: SASL(-4):
no mechanism available: No worthy mechs found authentication not supported
At first I thought I had a problem with my provider, but Firefox,
Thunderbird and other packages which use SASL appear to be working.
I renamed my Kmail config files and re-started Kmail with no config. I
added a POP and SMTP account and tried to send mail, that failed as well.
I have re-installed all the cyrus-sasl packages, but that didn't fix the
problem. I then tried an un-install and re-install of all the cyrus-sasl
packages except the base cyrus-sasl package (removing it means removing
a lot of other packages).
SuSE 9.3, Kmail 1.8.1 (KDE 3.4.1), cyrus-sasl 2.1.20-7
Any ideas on how to fix this without having to completely re-install
SuSE 9.3?
Thanks.
