Are you using kmail to provide IMAP addressbook and calendar resources to KDE?
If so, there is a known issue that the first app to load the kde addressbook causes kmail to start (since it has to be running to access the resources). If you were only testing this feature, you can prevent Kmail starting if you turn it off again by removing the resources and disable it in kmail's Configure->Misc->Groupware settings.
Otherwise, if you need these features, you'll have to live with kmail on startup for the time being. The kdepim team are working to change the design to decouple IMAP resources and kmail.
