Thanks. I got the 1.3.1-3 packages, and I'm about to install them. I'll see what breaks. apt most certainly will help me in case of trouble. BRB.

Oops. Seems kde-3.4.0 ensists on arts-1.4.0. So I think I'll compile arts-1.4.0 later this evening. Now it's dinner and JAG time. ;P
Cheers,
Thanks for all the leg-work you're doing on this. I consider system sounds important, and I wonder why this issue hasn't been addressed by the powers-that-be already.
This exchange appears to be pertinent and helpful: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/244052.
Well, I had a test user laying around. I removed its ~/.kde and ~/Desktop directories, but no way. I discovered I could play the test sound, but when I switched to my usual user account that worked too. So a fresh ~/.kde also results in partially working sounds. BTW, KMail is beeping happily when a new mail arrives (every minute).
I don't get to see JAG for another 12 hours!
Looking forward is half the fun! ;) ---- Ok, a recompiled (and newly installed) arts-1.4.0 indeed fixes the system sounds problem. (I had to install libjpeg-devel. Compilation took about 5 min.) Cheers, Leen
