Generally dpi is set by using the DisplaySize key in your XF86config. http://www.xfree86.org/4.5.0/XF86Config.5.html#sect9 I would not rely on any other file to do that, even if it could be possible (many ways lead to the destination, but there are differences as you noticed). for exapmle for my TFT as

but Xservers does not exist any more in KDE3.4
can anyone give me a hint where to find/write the new dpi values?
