arts woes in KDE 3.2

After a tortuous installation of KDE 3.2 on a 9.0 system, I've encountered,
among others, a nasty problem with arts. It started when I logged in after
installation and got a box with this message:
During the previous startup, KNotify crashed while instantiating KNotify.
Do you want to try again or disable aRts sound output?
I could not get past that except by disabling aRts, and now I have no sound.
The detailed traceback was:

Does anyone here know what I need to do to get my sound back?
