You can fix it by configuring Xmanager as following: 1. Run the Xconfig utility in the Xmanager folder. 2. Click Color tab, and then select PseudoColor in the Default Visual list. 3. Click Option tab, and then select WhenMapped in the Default Backing Store list. 4. Click OK to save the change and restart Xmanager. We are planning to release Xmanager 2.0 soon and it will support multiple visual simultaneously. You don't have to configure Xmanager in the new version Thanks for all your help. That's exactly what I've seen, so I had expected it to be the same problem. I think the problem is the missing RENDER extension. As far as I understood (I didn't really find a good description on the net), this extension simplifies the use of fonts and other pixmaps for X-applications, and many applications need it nowadays. Unfortunaely, KDE and also GNOME seem to need the extension, and - as part of KDE - also KDM. I would try to make the login screen as simple as possible, i.e. - disable anti-aliasing - be sure to use fonts that your Xserver knows of - use a simple GUI theme - don't use a background picture (no idea if this will help at all) And when it works, you can slowly turn back on one feature after the other...
