Both Xearth and Xglobe are background programs - NOT run from command line.

To activate either, do as follows.

Right click on desktop -> Configure Desktop

In Settings - KDE Control Module select Background on left.

Tick Common Background (optional)

In Wallpaper tab select No Wallpaper

In Background tab select Mode = Background Program

Left click on Setup

Select background program (xplanet/xearth/xglobe or whatever you have)

OK => OK

IMHO xplanet is better - you can use maps from xearth/xglobe, cnoneustomise
markers and lots of other goodies! (And it has a good documentation)
