Hi list! Maybe don't know a important thing. Can anybody explain, why all of you are using xmms through artsd? I tried this and it was horrible. You have delay with this, you have skips if system is on high usage and the sound quality ist poor in my eyes. I tried all ways named in the last mails. And there is only one way that keeps my audio fron skipping if the system is low on memory, and this is xmms oputput to alsa's oss interface. My system sometimes hangs about 5 seconds without being able to move my mouse, because of a Harddisk error. But sound is never skipping and if I press play, it plays at once, and if I press stop, it stops at once. The only thing to do to get this work is making oss unused by artsd. This can be easily done by configuring artsd to use alsa as backend in the control center. After that even stupid programs like realplay and flash plugin are heving sound, because they can connect to /dev/dsp. I don't have to run artsd with root priviledges, I don't need to auto-suspend arts (which makes arts sounds delay even more). Okay. If I missed something, I would really aprecciate any input about why it's better to use all apps through arts. Thanks, Daniel Am Freitag, 27. Juni 2003 15:22 schrieb Charles Philip Chan:
You need to use xmms-aRts as the output plugin. The source is here:
