Hello Jim,
The download speed is really a function of how busy the internet is and also the bandwidth available to your ISP and then to you. I get pretty good results using both a modem and ISDN from UKlinux.net.
There
is no fee for the standard account although calls are charged at local rate. I would suggest that you have a look at their website where the different account types are fully explained.
Cheers.
Michael.
I use Telewest SurfAnytime = £12.99/month no call charges Today as example downloaded KOffice-1.2.1 (10.5Mb) using Win98 (where I set MTU in registry to 512) took 1hr 5min. I've always cancelled 98 downloads if the rate dropped below 1Mb. I have never got anywhere near that sort of rate under Linux in the six months I've been using it. Tried a Yast online update recently 5.8Mb - gave up after 2.5 hrs with nominally 50% of the download completed. I want to stick with Linux but this problem - and it alone - is really starting to (put it politely) get on my nerves!! Jim
Hi Jim, I don't understand the difference you seem to be experiencing from one OS to another on a modem. My experience with Linux on a modem was excellent! In fact, I was fairly amazed at the speed increase I experienced from using Windows and even the Amiga! The Amiga was better than Windows though, but then, my server uses Linux for their OS. It might be that the problem is not at your machine, but your servers because they use Windows on their servers. I can't say for sure that it would be the difference, but my modem speeds have always been excellent on a modem with Linux. One other note, I do use an external modem. Are you using a hardware internal modem or software internal? If you are using a Winmodem (software), then there lies your answer.
