Thanks Vadym,
I followed your instructions and there was some improvement. At least YaST loads in a gui now - since the update I've had to use the console version.
However, the error messages are still there in KControl. These files (the libkcm_XXX.la) just don't get installed. Any idea which package has them?
Missing module files are:
libkcm_socks.la
Is only present in: AptContents.SuSE-7.3-i386.gz:opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkcm_socks.la kdebase
libkcm_newsticker.la libkcm_lanbrowser.la libkcm_konq.la libkcm_kamera.la
Is present in: AptContents.SuSE-8.0-i386.gz:opt/kde3/lib/kde3/libkcm_kamera.la Hardware_Other/kdegraphics3-kamera AptContents.SuSE-8.1-i386.gz:opt/kde3/lib/kde3/libkcm_kamera.la Hardware_Other/kdegraphics3-kamera
libkcm_midi.la libkcm_kcmkxmirpcd.la libkcm_konqhtml.la
AptContents.SuSE-7.3-i386.gz:opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkcm_konqhtml.la X11_KDE_Base/kdebase
libkcm_nsplugin.la libkcm_alarmdaemonctrl.la
Thanks immensely for your help so far. Getting YaST back was a BIG help!!
It seems you're running the old kcontrol. What is the result of: - which kcontrol (in a konsole window). - and "rpm -qa | grep ^k" Any kde2... pkgs around. Any kde3 pkgs around? Which suse version are you running.

Hi Rich,
it seems your KDE 3.1 installation still contains old files from previous versions of KDE. Try the following: init 3; ps -ef | grep kde | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9 rpm -ivh
/*.rpm --replacefiles --replacepkgs /sbin/SuSEConfig init 5 Regards, Vadym

Having now grepped my entire linux installation I cannot find any traces of libkcm-XXX anywhere. The only entries to appear in the search were libkcm_liquid.la libkcm_liquid.so libkcm_susesearch.la libkcm_susesearch.so libkcm_yast2.la libkcm_yast2.so libkcm_cdbosettings.la libkcm_cdbosettings.so libkcm_hardware.la libkcm_hardware.so libkcm_kgamma.la libkcm_kgamma.so libkcm_kuick.la libkcm_kuick.so libkcm_kwix.la libkcm_kwix.so
After reading another thread that suggested loading kdebase (not kdebase3) I tried it only to find that the error message didn't appear but Control Center seg-faulted and crashed.
So there really is no copies of the missing libkcm files on the HD. Which packages do I need to get them? None of the KDE3 rpms seem to have them...
Thanks
Rich
