Hi -
Being relatively new to SUSE Linux, not sure if these are KDE questions or general Linux questions. I'm running Suse 7.3. Background: prior to installing SuSE 7.3, I had installed RedHat 6.1, but never did much with the system and eventually removed it. Although I do have some Linux background, it is spotty over time.
1) When I shut down lately, I notice the "Shutdown or reboot" submenu is wider than it used to be, and when I click on the down arrow to list the selections, one of them says "Warning: mapfile created with lba32 option". This option is selectable, and if you choose it, the system reboots back into Linux with no changes or problems that I can see. What's up with this?

2) I did a "df" and it's reporting that my file system is 96% full! Only have /boot, / and /swap partitions defined, so I assume it's talking about "/", which is 1.8M+ in size . My personal id takes up about 50M, and my wife and son's are each at about 41M. I tried deleting some huge logs in /var/log, but subsequent "df"s displayed no change in reported statistics. Any useful suggestions will be appreciated. ========================= Bob, How large is your hard drive that you have SuSE installed on? It appears that you a smaller drive and if you have installed the full SuSE & KDE or Gnome as well on it, then quite likely it is pretty full. I have an older system with a 2gb drive that gets pretty full with an install and one GUI interface. I believe they also recommend if you do a pretty full install, something like 4-6gb is needed. But if you have a 10 or 20 or 40gb drive and it is 96% full, then there might be a

3) What with all the horror stories about upgrading to 8.0 and 8.1 that I've seen on this list, I am very reticent to upgrade to newer distributions of KDE. It seems to me that you really have to know how KDE works under the covers to achieve a good upgrade (I define good as "things that worked or were there before still work and are still there afterwards" +and+ "new things work and are not affected by old things"). Anyone care to comment? =========================== Well, for this I would have to disagree, as I think you would find that either 8.0 or 8.1 will be better on your machine. I went from a 7.3 to 8.0 on a 233mhz machine and could see the performance improve right away. I wouldn't recommend an update from your 7.3 as so many things have changed, but I do believe that you will see there are not nearly as many bugs in KDE3 as you might think and the performance alone will make you glad you did.
