Good day Carl,
If your drive supports reading the disk atip you can get cdrecord to tell you the indicated writing speed for the disk in the drive.
cdrecord dev=<whatever> -atip
It worked. Thank you Johnny. I'm writing one now. I traded the high=speed CDRW's for slow ones and get this: # cdrecord dev=0,0 -atip Cdrecord 1.11a28 (i686-suse-linux) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling scsidev: '0,0' scsibus: 0 target: 0 lun: 0 Linux sg driver version: 3.1.23 Using libscg version 'schily-0.6' Device type : Removable CD-ROM Version : 0 Response Format: 1 Vendor_info : 'SONY ' Identifikation : 'CD-RW CRX700E ' Revision : '1.6r' Device seems to be: Generic mmc CD-RW.
