Hi,
Try to copy kdmrc from KDE2 directory to KDE3. This works for me.

cp /etc/opt/kde2/share/config/kdm/kdmrc /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

and may be make a new link

ln -s /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

Then you can change the settings later in control center.
