installing downloaded packages

Just to show how new I am to Linux I have a real stupid question.
I have an Epson Perfection 610 USB scanner. SuSE doesn't offer a driver
package for it, but Epson does. I downloaded the file but can't figure out
how to install it (no executabel file like Windows).
The file ends with an .rpm suffix, but the package managers all report "fail
to ---something" when I try to open/double click on the file.
