Desktop Trash Icon

I have a trivial, but irritating little problem. Somehow, I have screwed
up the trash icon, so that it no longer indicates whether or not there
is anything in the trash (ie. the lid is always on the can, even when
there are files in the trash).
Can someone tell me how to return the trash icon to it's normal display
mode?
