das Problem ist sicher schon bekannt, aber ich habe im Archiv nichts gefunden:

nach Erstellung eines von der SuSE7.1 unabhängigen Kernels 2.4.x klappt es 
mit isdn und ppp nichtmehr. Es kommen beim booten merkwürdige Meldungen an, 
die ich unten einmal offenlege. (pppd out of date...)

Der SuSE-eigene Kernel funktioniert, also muss doch ein Fehler in der 
/usr/src/linux/.config vorliegen - oder?

Die Auszüge sind etwas alt, weil ich zwischendurch keine Zeit hatte mich um 
das Problem weiter zu kümmern - es ist aber alles noch beim alten.

Maybe ippp0 has no 'syncppp' encapsulation?
