I can rely the message; but beware: any discussion starting will have to be joined in by you: otherwise, there is absolutely no gain in informing -Factory as well.
For the past 3 releases we have language installation problem. If someone choose to install openSUSE, for example in Greek, the result will be half Greek and half English (picture: blue is in Greek and other is in English [1]). Although many people reported this bug to bugzilla [2] and [3], nothing changed. openSUSE 11.4 was the last release that worked fine (even from the very first screen by pressing F2 button).
Hmm. It is a tough nut I'm afraid. But in the end, it sounds like libzypp should pull it more languages in this case; at least once; Despite the previous non-acceptance of the bug reports, I would recommend to enter a new one against 13.1; and see where this leads (persistence is a good quality).
A proposal would be to change the fist screen of YaST installation, where it prompts for language. Change it to ONLY English.
That sounds like a step in the wrong direction. We should fix the process, not make it more complicated.
When everything is set, I see 2 solutions.
1. PCLinuxOS has an icon on the desktop (adlocale) that prompts you to install your language settings. I guess it's an easy script. 2. GNOME has GNOME initial setup [4]. You can also read an article about it [5]. The idea is that after the installation, you get a prompt to setup online accounts, timezone, new user account, small tour about GNOME etc. By the way, although it says that we'll see it on GNOME 3.8, I didn't see it on Milestone 4.
gnome-initial-setup does in it's current form not have a space in openSUSE: the trigger for it is 'no local user on the system'. After passing YaST, there is ALWAYS a user on the system; so g-i-s does not do anything. Other than that, of course, I did look at g-i-s as well to see if there are any aspects we can make use of; integration of it though would mean entirely different installation scripts for KDE or GNOME installs. Certainly not at this stage for 13.1 I'm afraid. (I can provide the package, but as said: it's without use in the current situation.
The language installation can be done via YaST after installation (that's the solution we propose here). But it's better to be done automatically after installation.
I agree: if the installer was instructed to a specific language, we agree that not all packs can be on the live CD; but that should not stop us from giving the user a working translated system in the end (after running online-updates, or if running on net connection, possibly directly from the installer).
Something should be done about it since it's major issue to promote openSUSE. Marketing cannot cover end users. End users also don't read release notes. Many of my friends (that I helped to install openSUSE), they turned it to Linux Mint or Ubuntu (I guess for the simplicity they provide).
