Update: tried this week's Factory Build 314 GNOME LiveCD.
Good news A: the Live session again got the Radeon and wireless
firmware right and I was able to get online with a fully-functional
Live desktop.
Bad news: mkinitrd failed when installing to disk (lots of radeon
modules listed) and when I finally told it to stop trying, grub failed
to install. My mistake was telling grub to try the MBR after it
failed on the root partition, making the computer unbootable.
Good news B: after today's experiment I was able to restore my trashed
system with the 12.1 installer. /opt/gnome was unfortunately on the
root partition (which I replace when I re-install) and 12.1 is simply
not up to restoring my jhbuild toolchain.

I re-installed from the latest Live iso, with the same result. When I
reverted to Build 0154 (2012-02-11) everything worked except GNOME
3.4. I'll wait to see the resolution of the bug before I upgrade.
