Anyway, I went and looked in ~/.xsession-errors and I see it appear to
end with a "JS ERROR" exception relating to 'requiring Gkbd, version:
none'.  There is no package named *gkbd*, some searching about made me
suspect this should be provided by "gir", but that package is installed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Please check the availability of libgnomekbd and if it matches the
correct version. A small transcript of the version I have currently
installed:
