After digging for hours on this issue I finally arrived at my answer: there is no way to define a default. The domain selector box in GDM is specific to OpenSUSE and after looking at the patch's code I realized there is no way to do what I want. I *may* at some point write a patch for my company's GDM and contribute it to OpenSUSE, but then it creates another nightmare of ensuring that GDM is never updated or installed from the wrong source.
Hey Nick It's easy to maintain a personally patched version of GDM or anything else in the OBS and add that repo to your company's machines' repos - at least until the upstream GDM is fixed to meet your needs OOTB.
