No, more recent kernels just do not boot. Simple as that (classical pata support removed; bugzilled).

My answer does not really address your original topic of the post, but still:
My issue is that the repositories that existed for gnome have been deleted. One thing is not to package anything more for 11.0, and another is to delete what was already done and ready. Absurd!
I had issues with 11.1 on my machine with the FS falling back to R/O once in a while (typically with heavy load). It did not matter if it was reiserfs or ext3. Just ext3 showed it a bit less frequent.
I solved it on my machine with upgrading the kernel to anything more recent from Factory at that time (or Kernel:HEAD). Since then my 11.1 is running great on my machine at home. Perfect uptime, no R/O file systems. Just fun.
