My answer does not really address your original topic of the post, but still:

I had issues with 11.1 on my machine with the FS falling back to R/O once in a
while (typically with heavy load). It did not matter if it was
reiserfs or ext3. Just ext3 showed it a bit less frequent.

I solved it on my machine with upgrading the kernel to anything more recent
from Factory at that time (or Kernel:HEAD). Since then my 11.1 is running
great on my machine at home. Perfect uptime, no R/O file systems. Just fun.

Maybe it helps you tackle it down.
