SLED 10 and SuSE Linux 10.1 are more of a problem because of the age of
things like hal and dbus.

The issue with glib you found is that while GNOME is backwards
compatible its not forwards compatible so G:S in general will be all or
nothing (ie you won't have an easy time cherry picking individual
packages).
