I just realized my instructions are incomplete... how does one logout?
Here are the full instructions from the bug:
hit Alt-F2 and type in gnome-control-center
Click on the "Assistive Technology Preferences"
un-check the "Enable assistive technlologies" and click Close
hit Alt-F2 and type in "libssui-tool --logout" without the quotes
logout and back in, logout and shutdown now work
