The current standard for these are PNG files which are easier to handle from design perspective. Bug #868871 also states, that these new PNG files should be placed in theme and thus SLE could use different set of images for SLE/openSUSE or installation/running system. References: SUSE Bugzilla #868871 Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Software selection in installation and on a running system could use different UI theme. Or just "some" theme.
