Title: Software Search to arrive at most desirable options

+ Buildservice: Unconfirmed
+ Priority
+ Requester: Desirable

openSUSE Infrastructure: Unconfirmed
Priority
Requester: Important

Info Provider: Carl Fletcher (caf4926)
Requested by: Carl Fletcher (caf4926)
Partner organization: openSUSE.org

Description:
Currently the Software Search and or Webpin results in a plethora of
choices, most of which are less than desirable. Ideally, search results
should First offer the most stable and or suitable packages. For
example. If a user comes along and searches for 'VLC' They are offered
a host of unstable options. Everyone knows that 'VLC' should come from
Packman. If we can't refer directly to Packman, it should be possible
to link to a multi-media giuide.
I'm going to guess this could be difficult. But it must be possible to
flag searches by keywords to redirect to the most likely solution, but
with an option to continue to search anyway.

Test Case:
Open here: http://software.opensuse.org/search and search: vlc

Business case (Partner benefit):
openSUSE.org: Avoid new user use of unstable or unsuitable repos.
We should be directing to the most suitable or most likely suitable
solution. At the moment it's very random.

Discussion:
#1: Thomas Schmidt (digitaltomm) (2010-12-16 09:29:00)
I already thought of adding notifications based on keywords that point
to the right download pages for example packman, nvidia etc.

#2: Thomas Schmidt (digitaltomm) (2010-12-16 18:19:16)
We added some default notifications now for "nvidia", "broadcom",
"google earth". Which were the most failing searches according to the
logs. Could you provide more helping texts for specific search terms?

#5: Michal Marek (michal-m) (2011-02-15 12:02:55) (reply to #2)
This is great! But could you consider moving the message below the
search box, so that it appears close to the regular results? Maybe it's
just me, but it took me a while until I figured I have to look above
for it.

#3: Carl Fletcher (caf4926) (2010-12-16 19:23:42)
Thomas. Thanks for the feedback. But before we address this any further.
Please confirm - Which is the preferable search option: 1:
http://software.opensuse.org/search%3Cbr/%3E 2:
http://packages.opensuse-community.org/ For example you mention
'broadcom' But the results in webpin gives a search result But software.
opensuse shows no results - only a rather un-obvious hint to packman at
the top of the page. IMO, that packman link needs flashing lights on
it. A search for 'ffmpeg' in the two search pages offers differing
results. But again I suggest it point to Packman in the first instance.
'mplayer' the same issue
I need not go on. In fact webpin offers the better results in most
cases.

#4: Martin Seidler (pistazienfresser) (2011-02-14 17:53:12)
And should openSUSE:Tumbleweed not be a separate option? Nowadays I get
packages form Tumbleweed if I search on software.opensuse.org after
choosing 11.3. Example:
http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=Mozillafirefox&baseproject=openSUSE%
3A11.3&lang=en&exclude_filter=home%3A&exclude_debug=true

#7: Carl Fletcher (caf4926) (2011-02-18 06:35:39) (reply to #4)
Martin,
This is a fine comment and serves to illustrate my whole point. ATM it
seems like the search is trawling over everything and not filtering the
results (maybe it can't) I have a sneaking suspicion that a more
accurate result will only be possible with a complete rebuild of the
directory structure of OBS (I could be wrong though) But with webpin
and software-search both returning different results, someone needs to
decide which search we should use. My guess is that 'Software-Search'
has the recommendation, but in reality, 'Webpin' usually turns up the
more correct results.

#6: Christopher Yeleighton (yecril71pl) (2011-02-17 18:21:40)
The use or non-use of packages and the ordering of results should
depend on repository priorities. If it is different right now, it is a
bug. (Unknown repositories can have priorities 200+ N , where the value
of N is decided and provided by the community.)

#8: Martin Seidler (pistazienfresser) (2011-03-07 18:45:09) (reply to
#6)
Thanks Christopher for letting me understand that Software Search a bit more.
Maybe the default Update repositories could be added (with the most
prior priority like 10). This would also be a nice option if a new or
not so experienced user does not know anything of YaST>Software Manager
or just follows the given link in the wiki articles to the Software
Search.
Compare:
http://en.opensuse.org/Opera (http://en.opensuse.org/Opera)
"Download for openSUSE:
* Factory

3A&exclude_debug=true)
* 11.3 (http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=Opera&baseproject=openSUSE%
3A11.3&exclude_filter=home%3A&exclude_debug=true)
* 11.2

3A&exclude_debug=true)
* 11.1 (http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=Opera&baseproject=openSUSE%
3A11.1&exclude_filter=home%3A&exclude_debug=true)
"
gives for 11.3 -> opera-10.10-1.2.i586.rpm

3A%2F11.3%3A%2FNonFree%2Fstandard%2Fi586%2Fopera-10.10-1.2.i586.
rpm&query=opera) and so on
The best result for a not experienced user (and the standard to refer
to for a more experienced user) should in my view be from the standard
Update repository like
opera-11.01-1.2.1.i586.rpm
(http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.3/rpm/i586/opera-11.01-1.2.1.i586.rpm)
and so on with a corresponding YMP file.
