Feature changed by: Jedi Beeftrix (Jedibeeftrix) Feature #309259, revision 8 Title: Include VLC Package Wishlist: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Important Requested by: Ricardo Gabriel Berlasso (rgbsuse) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: Considering the fact that VLC phonon back-end is finally taking shape (http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/1171-Rapid-Progress-in-KDE-Multimedia.ht...) , I think is important to consider the inclusion of VLC client on openSUSE, even if "diminished" in the same way in which xine is actually shipped. Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: VLC is one of the best multimedia players for Linux and there will be a back-end for phonon that use it. The addition of VLC will give the user more choice and a better multimedia experience. Discussion: #1: John Shand (jshand2008) (2010-04-04 23:07:24) this will be a great idea! #2: Jan Engelhardt (jengelh) (2010-04-10 12:07:45) Doesn't vlc have the same uncertainity status as most of the other multimedia packages? #3: Ricardo Gabriel Berlasso (rgbsuse) (2010-04-10 14:05:27) (reply to #2) Not most: all others . Full Xine code is in the same train as mplayer, VLC... but openSUSE ships a cut down version with packman repo ready to deliver the full version. I think the same can be done with VLC. The main advantage of including VLC (even if "diminished") is the possibility to have the VLC phonon backend in the main repos: this will easy everything for kde users, even if they do not use the "full" VLC version: VLC actually sound better than xine (in fact, with xine it is difficult to reproduce flac files, which are an open standard, but VLC reproduce them without problems). VLC came also with network abilities. VLC came also with "devices" (webcam, etc) support... everything "out of the box". #4: Ricardo Gabriel Berlasso (rgbsuse) (2010-04-10 14:11:36) (reply to #3) Sorry, of course it is "VLC come" not "came"... #5: Ricardo Gabriel Berlasso (rgbsuse) (2010-04-10 19:23:39) (reply to #2) Just noticed that the FSF promote VLC on their PlayOgg campaign (http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/playogg/) . + #6: Jedi Beeftrix (jedibeeftrix) (2010-12-02 10:27:59) + or at the very least enable it so phonon easily integrates with vlc if + the latter is installed......... -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/309259
