Feature #307798, revision 12
Title: Amarok 2.2 in opensuse 11.2

- Package Wishlist: Unconfirmed
+ Package Wishlist: Done
Priority
Requester: Important

Requested by: Peter Gumbrell (gumb)

Description:
This is a late appeal to devs in view of the current release roadmap.
I believe the possibility of updating the Amarok version to 2.2 in the
forthcoming OS 11.2 release was rejected some weeks back in a KDE
meeting, though I don't know the technical reason. Perhaps it
introduces too many breakages, but I wondered if there was any prospect
of developers reversing this decision, bearing in mind that other apps
like SeaMonkey, Virtualbox have still been updated only this week?
Also, considering the decision was made to include currently very buggy
alpha releases of KDE4 apps like Kaffeine and K3B, the new Amarok 2.2
RC1 just appeared today and it seems the final release will therefore
be out well before OS 11.2, possibly leaving openSUSE behind with its
version compared to others in the glut of distros releasing around the
October / November period.
There are various changes and bugfixes in the 2.2 release, but I think
most notably the inclusion of CD support for playing and ripping is a
major feature many would benefit from, negating the need for
installation of separate media playing or ripping apps.

Something at the end of the software stack shouldn't be a problem to
last moment upgrade...
As I know there is only one plasmoid depending on amarok.

Hell yes.  Amarok 2.1.1 currently has the following issues that I am
aware of:

Fetching lyrics does not work.
Fetching album art does not work.
Watch folders for changes does not work.
Random UI lockups.
Podcast subscriptions allow a user to subscribe and then nothing
happens.

In short, 2.1.1 is a mess and the Amarok devs indicated as much when I
spoke to them on freenode. 2.2 is now out and should be moved into
11.2.

#3: Peter Gumbrell (gumb) (2009-10-30 16:47:19)
I think we can be certain that the next release is sticking with 2.1,
so I suggest this request is now modified to have Amarok 2.2 provided
as an official update after the openSUSE 11.2 release. I know that
normally only bugfix releases are provided this way, but there are
occasional exceptions and I think this deserves to be one of them. The
Amarok 2.1 series isn't receiving any further updates so far as I'm
aware, but according to the developers the 2.2 series will be prolonged
similar to how 1.4 was, with several incremental updates over coming
months. I'd say this makes it a better option for SUSE support through
the 11.2 cycle.

#4: Malvern Star (solaris444) (2009-12-26 18:38:35)
I'd really like to see this be the case.  2.1 is frankly a
disaster.  It is currently unusable, and 2.2 needs to be provided as an
updated ASAP.

#5: florian leparoux (t1loc) (2010-07-26 09:00:10)
Amarok 2.3.1svn is now on openSUSE 11.2
