Feature #310507, revision 7
Title: Repo-Changing Notifications in Updater Applet

openSUSE-11.4: Unconfirmed
Priority
Requester: Mandatory

Requested by: 6tr6tr 6tr6tr (6tr6tr)

Description:
Recently, the repository KDE:Community was taken offline and the
packages in there were apparently distributed into other repos. As a
user of openSUSE, the onyl way I discovered this was via a constant
error in my updater applet that told me it was unavailable. Then I went
to the forums with the error and was informed why. I was also told that
there had been advance notice on some mailing list (a list that people
who download and install openSUSE will nto be a member of
automatically). This is a very poor way of handling this for users of
openSUSE!
What should have happened was this:
1. Update Applet checks for updates and sees there's a "Repository
Change Notification."
2. It pops up this notification which reads something like:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Repository: KDE Community
URL: http://...elided.../Community
This repository is being removed on August 24, 2010. The packages
maintained in here will be switched to numerous other repositories,
some of which are new. To make sure you can update any
packages/applications you have provided by this repository, you have
two options:
    1. Click here to have YAST handle the switch automatically. It will
do the following:
        a. Add the New Repositories
        b. Check for any packages you have in this (KDE:Community)
repository
        c. Switch the packages over to the new repositories
        d. Remove the old repository

    2. Do this manually. See instructions at: http://someurl

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This popup then gives users of openSUSE advance notice and an easy way
to handle switching the packages over and changing repositories.

A better option could be to use NU service (group repositories) that
are already implemented in ZYpp.
See https://features.opensuse.org/307774

Even if something along those lines are used, the user should still be
notified of the change(s) to their repos. AND, any switching of
packages to those new repos still needs to occur (or at least be
offered as an option).

#3: Tom Zöhner (zoehneto) (2010-10-01 22:06:08)
I hope this problem will be solved, by the time 11.4 ships. I just had
the same problem as descibed above but with the 11.3-source repo, that
was moved aswell.

+ #4: 6tr6tr 6tr6tr (6tr6tr) (2010-10-13 18:04:57) (reply to #3)
+ What would it take to fast track this into 11.4? It shouldn't require
+ much in the way of programming.
