Feature changed by: 6tr6tr 6tr6tr (6tr6tr)
Feature #310646, revision 9
Title: Kernel 2.6.37 for opensuse 11.4
openSUSE-11.4: Unconfirmed
Priority
Requester: Important
Requested by: jimbo bigcreed (dimble_thricefoon)
Description:
I realise we are using a time based release, and no longer chase
feature releases, but 2.6.37 will have some very interesting
technologies according to phoronix:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODYyMw
"we can start getting excited for the Linux 2.6.37 kernel
(http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=search&q=Linux+2.6.37) and its
exciting new features: DisplayLink driver enhancements
(http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODUyMg) , improved
desktop responsiveness
(http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODU0OQ) ,
Broadcom's open-source driver
(http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODU4Mg) , improved
Radeon Evergreen DRM
(http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODU4Mw) , and Intel
Linux DRM improvements
(http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODYyMQ) ."
If 2.6.36 is due mid-Oct, then we can expect 2.6.37 to arrive Mid-Late
January, surely this is not too late for 11.4 which is expected Late-
Feb to Early-March?
Kind regards

It will be a great pitty if the 2.6.37 kernel is not included. This is
the kernel to get working on a new desktop OS!

+ THIS ( Broadcom's open-source driver
+ (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODU4Mg) ) alone is
+ reason enough!

I also agree we should ship kernel 2.6.37. Version 2.6.36 should be
ready soon enough, so version 2.6.37 should be ready at least in late
january, a month and a half before openSUSE 11.4 is released.

11.4-RC1 is scheduled for 2010-02-10 so depending on the actual 2.6.37
timing, there might not be much time for integration+testing which is
bad for stability. And with me being one of the testers, I would like
to see a stable release.

One of the big features listed for 2.6.37 is a new broadcom driver. I
would guess it could be backported to 2.6.36 relatively easily. So if
2.6.37 doesn't get into 11.4, I hope the broadcom driver is
backported. Especially since it is brand new, it should not cause any
reversion issues.
