Feature changed by: Robin Knapp (rknapp)
Feature #310199, revision 3
Title: Repository Announcements
openSUSE-11.4: Unconfirmed
Priority
Requester: Desirable
Requested by: Robin Knapp (rknapp)
Description:
I often read announcements in Mailing Lists that repositories are
renamed, deleted or whatever.
Especially in the KDE repos there is currently much restructuration
ongoing.
I propose to implement a feature in libzypp and its GUIs to be able to
show important announcements for each repository.
Ideally, multiple repositories can issue one common announcement which
will be displayed only once.
Examples:
- This repository will swich from KDE 4.5 to KDE4.6. To keep KDE 4.5,
_switch_to_repository_xyz_.
- The repositories x, y and z will be moved on $date. Click _here_ to
change it now
- This repository is obsolete. _remove_.
(Maybe repository switching, removing, adding etc. can be done by
clicking on a link in that text)
Discussion:
#1: Peg Russell (opensuseforumorg42) (2010-07-22 00:23:54)
Great suggestion.
The first indication of repository changes/demises is often an error
when doing a refresh. After getting the error, I start a search
(usually google) trying to figure out what has been changed or removed.
I have worked with other products that provide an integrated feed that
is focused and specific, so the message isn't lost and time isn't
wasted. Repositories are the lifeblood of a stable and progressive
system and an integrated announcement and/or action could be a user-
friendly valuable feature.
Thank you.
+ #2: Robin Knapp (rknapp) (2010-07-22 11:03:38) (reply to #1)
+ Yes, if a repository gets unavailable, this works.
+ But if a "stable" release gets updated to an experimental one, you
+ might end up with a not working desktop version - that's often the case
+ when using a Factory repository and a Stable openSUSE version gets
+ released - the Factory will then be updated to an unstable snapshot at
+ some time.
