Feature added by: Elmar Stellnberger (estellnb) Feature #308775, revision 1 Title: rnel with kernels from kotd/mastermerge or synchronize factory ke Buildservice: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Important Requested by: Elmar Stellnberger (estellnb) Description: The kernels provided at http://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/master/ are more recent and most important fully compatible with the kernel that is shipped by default with openSUSE. However this does not apply to factory kernels. If I try to install a factory-head kernel instead my machine will not even boot. However for a full Linux experience you need to compile and load several kernel modules that are not provided with kotd/master (f.i. kqemu, webcam drivers, etc.). It is currently not possible to use packages from factory for this purpose as these packages are provided in a different version and therefore far not recent enough. This request is about keeping the kernel versions of kotd/master and factory in sync so that you do not have to depeer kernel modules from factory. Besides this it would be very handy to make kotd/master a true zypp repository so that you can fetch updates automatically. On the other hand why not improve the factory-head kernels so that they are as recent as the master kernels and can be installed without headaches. Very important these days as openSUSE 11.2 has been shipped with an unstable kernel so that you can not even run cupsd. Other kernel induced faults like the ksoftirqd 100% cpu bug and recent s2disk problems make this a vital issue. It is currently not possible to do without the latest master kernel. It can last quite long (and yes it currently really does) until a proper update for all users is released so that it should always be possible to survive with master-kernels. Besides this a better support of master kernels will leverage early kernel testing so that these problems will not recur. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/308775
