Feature changed by: Kirk Kimmel (omf) Feature #307729, revision 9 Title: Officially Provide LXDE openSUSE-11.3: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Desirable Requested by: andrea florio (anubisg1) Developer: andrea florio (anubisg1) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: LXDE stands for L ightweight X 11 D esktop E nvironment. It is an extremely faster, performing and energy saving desktop environment. It is maintained by an international community of developers and comes with a beautiful interface, multi-language support, standard keyboard short cuts and additional features like tabbed file browsing LXDE actually is lighter than xfce and it's stable and mature enought to stay into openSUSE. Actually big distros like mandriva already provides LXDE. Mandriva for example allow you to install LXDE from DVD media. The only "problem" that LXDE has is the Login Manager, xdm is quite ugly and SLIM looks to be no more developed. That "problem" will be hopefully fixed in few weeks, infact they are now developing their login manager, LXDM as you can see here: http://blog.lxde.org/?p=531 Will be wonderful to have LXDE officially supported by openSUSE and why not, even available into the installation media. more infos: http://en.opensuse.org/LXDE http://lxde.org/ Use Case: The user will find LXDE packages into OSS repository, He will be able to install it using patterns. The user will install openSUSE using DVD, on DE selection he will able to select "other DE" and then LXDE from that list Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: Because that will attract more user, and will allow you to provide an openSUSE version able to running on 128MB of ram with X server running Discussion: #1: Stephen Kellat (skellat) (2009-09-10 22:51:13) In light of the whole debate over KDE, I do not see how this is appropriate at this time. #2: andrea florio (anubisg1) (2009-09-10 22:56:54) (reply to #1) 1st) of all that was "important" not just "desirable" for me :), i wonder to know why you changed that ;-) 2nd) excluding the "IMHO" wasting of time behing KDE default or no, lxde wont be a sobstitute fro gnome or kde that are the major DE, but it want to provide a better user experience to users with old pc's, that now have to use xfce. lxde is lighter and with an easier UI even for linux newbie + #3: Kirk Kimmel (omf) (2009-09-15 11:01:55) + I like the idea of being able to provide a slimmer solution over xfce + without having to resort down to just having twm or fvwm installed. + The real question is given all the packages currently on the install + DVD what would need to be added to create a LXDE pattern? + -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/307729
