They haven't even made the switch from /usr/share/rpm to /usr/lib/sysimage/rpm yet, and that one is relatively "easy" to do. I suspect it'll be much harder to get them (and other OSTree users) to change so that /usr/etc is free for this purpose.
I'm not as confident about getting that through, but we can *try*.
That said, I'm surprised that there is an aspect of Linux you're shy about!
I wish we *could* rename /etc to /cfg or /config now... It's much more meaningful than "et cetera"... But one step at a time!
So again, I support /usr/config or /usr/cfg (in that order of preference).
I personal still prefer /usr/share/defaults :) and would like /usr/cfg choose over /usr/etc. But even when we discussed this SUSE internal the last week, the result was unamimously: everybody wanted /usr/etc, no alternative, no new suggestion, nothing else. I have no idea why the OSTree developers did choose /usr/etc and not /usr/lib/ostree, if this would be OStree specific data. In the end, /usr/etc contains the distribution default configuration files. So exctly the same as we plan to do. So from this side, there should be no conflict. OSTree uses /usr/etc to populate /etc. Something which would be obsolete long term, as /etc contains only the changes anyways, independent of our or Lennarts plans. So if OSTree continues to merge /etc with /usr/etc in /etc, there is no conflict with our proposal. And last, CoreOS is not designed that people install their workload as RPM but run it as container. Even if they can now install their own RPMs. So no real problem, too. In the end: currently, I don't see a real problem with ostree on the one side, and on the other side: if so many people prefer /usr/etc, I would choose this to let the people feel more "coming home" than "I have to learn something completly new".
