For instance, a decade or so ago, I wrote a series of getting-started-with-Linux articles for the Register, and included some very simple commands to enable some additional repositories and add in packages for video playback and so on.
In the comments, I was lambasted for this. "If you have to type anything, it's too hard. Ordinary users won't do that." Etc.
I have been told the exact same thing - and I know it was not the same people, as these do not write English, and it was face to face.
Other commentators pointed out that with text commands, you could cut-and-paste them, and that meant they'd be error-free. Long descriptions of what to click can't be copied-and-pasted, and that means people will get stuff wrong.
And it is true. By the way, I never try to convince Windows guys to try Linux. It is a rule of mine. If the thing goes bad, they will cook me alive; and it always god bad at least on a minor hurdle - and there it goes. But if they are convinced that they want to try for whatever reason, then I help all I can. I don't try to convince them to start with openSUSE either, unless they want me to do the maintenance. I may suggest openSUSE, though. Reason? Everybody knows Ubuntu is easier. Sigh . - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
