I have always seen an icon on the left to add a tab, and one on the right to delete the current tab. Never an empty space.
Previously, if, for instance there was only one tab open, it extended only half the width of the window. Double clicking on the part of the tab bar that was not covered by that tab would open a new tab.
These need to be enabled in konsole in Settings->Configure Konsole->TabBar
I've done this now, but it's not as convenient.
I don't see what your point is. I'm now running Leap 42.2 and myu screen is wide enough )1280px) that even with 5 tabs open there still empty space, and double clicking in the space creates another tab. Oops, there are 6 more! And the tab width shrinks so there's always some blank space.
