I believe "network is unreachable" means that the server cannot be contacted at all, though it is up on my end.
But that message is produced by NM. If I try with FF it does nothing. With "links" it says "No content". NM is probably probing for some specific response and doesn't get it. It doesn't need to be valid html, which apparently is not (judging by what FF does).
Did you try doing the command listed in the message above? (curl -I http://conncheck.opensuse.org)
Try it and see if you also get the same message.
