Hello maintainers.
I would like to see some dd with progress meter :) and found out that
You should just use ddrescue (gnu_ddrescue), also because it does not have the awkward conversion (conv=).
what do you mean?
Er, awkward options like count= (combined with bs=) which make you have to do convert byte offsets into sector-sized pieces, and damn you if the number of bytes to skip=, seek= or be transferred is a prime number. Well, these options may make sense in their own right, but just once again show that dd is not the tool anyone should be looking for.
Admittedly, calculations with count=, bs=, skip= and seek= can become complicated (while you may split it into 2 dd's, one for seeking and one for the actual reading), but this doesn't clarify why conv= would be awkward. After all, dd(1) is a general-purpose, low-level tool which is very powerful, so sure it not a tool anyone could use (without reading and understanding the manual).
