I was thinking why shouldn't we create a "Contrib" repo
What would be different from the Contrib repo we have started, failed with because people didn't care about their submissions, and closed some years ago?

## Proposal: ## (open)SUSE has no direct equivialient to Centos/Redhat EPEL. Call that child "ExtraPackages", "Contrib", or any other (short, but significant) name. ## What is the diff from plain Distro / Factory(Tumbleweed) ? ## * No legal review forced, but welcome. "The Rules" for allowed on openSUSE obs still apply, so the software should be able to pass muster, else it's a candidate for Packman. * Niggles, like: "Wah! Use SUSE special macros only!" do NOT apply. No special SUSE only stuff, valid package means: valid (rpm)build, valid test (build, install, run, uninstall) * Newer Versions than on Distro are welcome. Which lowers the pressure to get things into Distro, gives extra testing, should make getting approval for Distro / Factory easier, if proven good in this repo. ## Why should (open)SUSE enable such a repo? ## * To get to the point where a normal user has four (4) repos max active, or even installed at all: 1. Distro (Frozen Gold) 2. Distro Update 3. Packman (for Multimdia, codecs, stuff not legally possible in Distro) 4. "ExtraPackages Repo" * Reduceing the number of active repos on the user machines reduces interference between these repo, giving way to a smoother experience. * Reducing the pressure on legal team. Times and times again legal review (the time it took between initial review request and review done) has been very contra productive in getting packages ready for Factory. Added to legal came the "Extra SUSE only" stuff by distro rules. Enabling a step-between devel-repo and distro-repo (Factory) gives us packagers the space to breath, the interested users the extra time to use (and test) such a package, and when done with the legal review, and the additional distro testing the package can be moved into Factory repo while still living in "ExtraPackages" for the already released distros. That my oppinion and idea? Do you all have a better one? IMHO "Contrib" is the wrong name (leaden with past faiure), "EPS" (ExtraPackagesSUSE) would be short, pointed, and recognizeable. - Yamaban. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
