XFCE might depend on gvfs, udisks does not. You can mount devices using udisk[...] Dolphin uses udisks via its solid library.
What I mean is: there is an udisksd process running. Why can't udisks do the *auto*mounting instead of gvfsd?
Well ... at some point it was decided that it should be user decision.
