May I submit that this switch creates more problems than it solves. Upstream has been pondering it for years and not made it yet, that should tell you something.

Ah. I've looked at the manpage and gave up when not seeing an ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES section. It seems that GNU has abolished that section entirely in their versions of manual pages and the info manuals scatter that information all over the place. Great. For the record, my immediate problem is solved by setting TAR_OPTIONS='--pax-option=delete=[ac]time*' since it is not the format as such but rather the extended header information that confuses some applications, most notably GNU Emacs. Reported upstream as Emacs bug#12455.
