It's grub2. I have EFI in the BIOS set to Auto, my .config has 
"CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION=y" and CONFIG_EFI is not set.

The plymouth progress bar just stops.
Next kernel build I shall check it, Xorg.0.log.old says "no screens 
found" but that was without nouveau modules loaded and the nvidia module 
not built.

Most likely cause is "no screens found" as they would be no driver at 
this stage.
