I guess habit more than anything. I nearly always do that on test
machines as it is easier to check running process, etc, and correct before
starting graphics, ie: in factory booting to rl 3 does not start postfix
and I have experienced the same in 12.1-tumbleweed. Postfix does start
when moving to rl 5.
I do a cold boot and check for sure.

Ok, this can be correct. KDM will only start in runlevel 5 and KDM is takingAnd plymouthd is always running, despite that KDM has started ?
no, but *after* booting into rl3 it shows via zypper ps
care of stopping Plymouth. I have to check with Frederic Crozat to see if I
can put something specific for rl3.
But why are you booting into rl3 and not in multi-user or rl5 ?

last boot (cold) X went to vt8 and plymouth is not *now* active.
And plymouth was running on vt7 and KDM became active on vt8 ? Was this a
direct boot into rl5 ?
I do a cold boot and check for sure.
