being cleared, *not* about files being cleared disreguarding settings.
It is an openSUSE bug but not related to your loss.

Ahh, interesting. Then it *was* an opensuse bug which killed a few GB
of my data. Just checked and I've got the "no" there, while the cron
mechanism was disabled as well:
MAX_DAYS_IN_TMP=""
TMP_DIRS_TO_CLEAR="/tmp /var/tmp"
CLEAR_TMP_DIRS_AT_BOOTUP="no"
