The key parts are "used to be safe" and "without warning". A responsible
distributor doesn't risk his users' data in this way.

conversly, a "responsible user" doesn't store data "expecting it to be
save" in a system temporary directory, keyword *temporary*:

And, "a responsible user" makes backup's & test if restore is
functioning satisfactory. period.
Specially before doing anything drastic.

Even then shit happens: Made regularly backups on two different external
drives, and tested them, but in my darkest hour they both failed...

Who ever you blame, the distributor shouldn't be part of the equation.
